Playwrights in the City October 2008
Hello all, Well we closed Late and Black Medea last Sunday and it was a pleasure to sit and watch the productions one last time. All the performances had grown so much and as we sat around at Betty’s having an après show drink it struck me just how much I had enjoyed being and creating with these people. They are a wonderfully talented crew and it was hard to say goodbye. It is also very hard to know that the main producing for this
season is already over. We do have lots of other things coming up
but I’m not sure how I feel about having our shows done for the
year. With that in mind I would ask you to remember that the work
does keep moving forward here and your support is always needed.
I am happy to announce our first ever International Playwirghts Forum,
featuring renowned playwrights Velina Hasu Houston, Kwame Kwei-
Armah and Migdalia Cruz- taking place Oct. 31, Nov. 1 & 2.

We have a full weekend of events including our opening party, which
includes seeing The Misfit by Anita Majumdar and/or Pyaasa by Anusree Roy
at Theatre Passe Muraille on Fri. Oct. 31.
We are still in the midst of building the Saturday evening Across the TDot readings but so far there will be short pieces by Laurence Anthony, Marie Beath Badian, Victor Gomez, Aisha Sasha John, motion, Alicia Payne and David Yee. I am still looking for a couple more pieces and I will let you know who I find. If you know of any interested groups, playwrights units, individual playwrights,
etc. please forward this information to them and visit our website - all are
welcome.
Obsidian is truly fortunate to have two outstanding people as Playwrights in Residence this year.

Through the auspices of the Ontario Arts Council, Joseph Jomo Pierre and Donna-Michelle St. Bernard will be our PiR and I am looking forward to see what synergies can happen over the next year. Obsidian has worked with Joseph on Born Ready, Pusha Man and Hip Hop: Who Stole the Soul while Donna-Michelle was part of our inaugural Playwrights Unit and has several pieces in development, most notably Gas Girls with New Harlem Productions. Here's the deal...
