Our remount
production of Born Ready is part of the RISK LIFE Project; a
unique collaboration with Obsidian Theatre, Roseneath Theatre and
Theatre Passe Muraille. Along with Obsidian's Born Ready,
Roseneath will present David Craig's Smokescreen; an exploration
of youth and drug abuse. Together, these one act plays present a
comprehensive look at extremely relevant issues facing today's youth.
The RISK LIFE Project is an immediate response to the growing dilemmas
facing young people.
Born Ready
focuses on the experiences of two black youth growing up in Scarborough
and the devastating effects of today's urban gun culture. Joseph
Jomo Pierre writes about youth violence and the world in which it exists
from a place that feels close to home. The events of the play are
elevated through poetic dialogue but also speak to youth in a familiar
urban voice emphasizing the need to speak honestly about the causes of
youth violence within our communities.
This
exciting double bill will be complete with youth forums, question and
answer periods and late night concerts with outreach to youth audiences
across Toronto during Black History Month at the Theatre Passe Muraille
Mainspace. An event not to be missed.
"Two different plays, two different styles, one overriding concern: the problems of young people in Toronto today.
The double bill of Born Ready and Smokescreen that opened at Theatre Passe Muraille last night makes for an exciting evening of theatre." Toronto Star
